Tech Help for Seniors: How to Use Your Tablet or Smartphone With Confidence

Making the Text Bigger

If the text on your screen is too small to read comfortably, you can make it larger. On an iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Text Size and drag the slider to the right. On an Android tablet or phone, go to Settings > Accessibility > Font Size. This one change can make your device much easier to use every day.

Making Video Calls to Family

One of the most valuable things a tablet or smartphone can do is let you see and talk to family members who live far away. Here are the most common options:

FaceTime — Works between iPhones, iPads, and Macs. Just tap the FaceTime app and select a contact.
Zoom — Works on any device. Great for group calls with multiple family members.
Google Meet — Works on Android and iPhone. Easy to use and free.

Sending and Reading Email

Most tablets and smartphones come with an email app pre-installed. On iPhone and iPad, it is called Mail. On Android, it is usually Gmail. To set up your email, you will need your email address and password. Once it is set up, you can send and receive messages just like on a computer — often with a larger, easier-to-read screen.

Staying Safe Online

Seniors are frequently targeted by online scams. Here are the most important rules to remember:

Never click a pop-up that says your device is infected and tells you to call a phone number.
Never give your password, Social Security number, or bank information to someone who calls you unexpectedly.
If something feels wrong, hang up or close the app and call a family member or trusted technician.

Charging Your Device Properly

To keep your battery healthy, try to keep your charge between 20% and 80% when possible. Avoid letting it drain completely to 0% regularly. Use the charger that came with your device, or a certified replacement — cheap third-party chargers can damage your battery over time.
