Just Got a New Phone, Tablet, or Laptop? Here Is What to Set Up First
Getting a new device is exciting — but the setup process can feel overwhelming if you do not know where to start. Whether you just unboxed a new iPhone, Android phone, iPad, or Windows laptop, there are a few critical steps you should take right away to make sure your device is secure, backed up, and working the way you need it to.
I am Mitchell Flecker, founder of FleckTech Solutions, and I help families and seniors across Saratoga Springs, Albany, and Long Island, NY get their new devices set up properly every week. Here is my step-by-step guide.
Step 1: Connect to Wi-Fi and Run All Updates
Before you do anything else, connect to your home Wi-Fi and check for software updates. Go to Settings > General > Software Update (iPhone) or Settings > Windows Update (Windows). Updates fix security vulnerabilities and bugs, and it is much better to install them before you start using the device.
Step 2: Sign In to Your Account
For iPhones and iPads, sign in with your Apple ID. For Android devices, sign in with your Google account. For Windows laptops, you can use a Microsoft account or a local account. Your account is what ties your apps, purchases, and backups together — make sure you know your login credentials before you start.
Step 3: Set Up a Screen Lock
Enable a PIN, password, or biometric lock (Face ID, fingerprint) immediately. This is your first line of defense if your device is ever lost or stolen. On iPhones, go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode. On Android, go to Settings > Security. On Windows, go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
Step 4: Transfer Your Data
If you are upgrading from an old device, now is the time to transfer your contacts, photos, and apps. iPhones can use Quick Start or iCloud backup. Android devices can use Google Backup or the manufacturer’s transfer app. For laptops, you can use an external drive, cloud storage, or a data transfer cable.
Step 5: Set Up Backups
Do not wait until something goes wrong to set up a backup. Enable iCloud Backup on iPhone (Settings > Your Name > iCloud > iCloud Backup) or Google One Backup on Android. For laptops, set up Windows Backup or Time Machine on Mac. A backup you never set up is a backup that does not exist.
Step 6: Install Your Essential Apps
Restore your apps from your old device backup, or manually install the ones you use most. Prioritize your email app, banking apps, communication tools (Zoom, FaceTime, WhatsApp), and any work-related apps. Take this opportunity to skip apps you never actually used.
Step 7: Personalize Accessibility Settings
If you find small text difficult to read, or if you prefer larger icons, now is a great time to adjust your accessibility settings. On iPhone, go to Settings > Accessibility. On Android, go to Settings > Accessibility. On Windows, go to Settings > Ease of Access. These settings can make a huge difference in day-to-day usability, especially for seniors.
