How to Fix Slow Wi-Fi at Home: 7 Proven Tips From a Local Tech Expert
If your Wi-Fi is slow, dropping out, or leaving dead zones throughout your home, you are not alone. Slow internet is one of the most common tech complaints I hear from families across Saratoga Springs, Albany, and Long Island, NY. The good news? Most Wi-Fi problems are fixable — often without calling your internet provider.
I’m Mitchell Flecker, founder of FleckTech Solutions, and in this guide I will walk you through the seven most effective ways to fix slow Wi-Fi at home.
1. Restart Your Router (The Right Way)
Before anything else, try a proper restart. Unplug your router and modem from the wall, wait a full 60 seconds, then plug the modem back in first, wait 30 seconds, and then plug in the router. This clears cached memory and forces a fresh connection to your ISP. Many people simply press the reset button, which is not the same thing.
2. Check Your Router Placement
Your router placement has a huge impact on signal strength. Place your router in a central, elevated location — not in a closet, behind a TV, or on the floor. Walls, appliances, and furniture all absorb and block Wi-Fi signals. Ideally, your router should be in an open area at roughly waist-to-chest height.
3. Switch to the 5 GHz Band
Most modern routers broadcast on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies. The 5 GHz band is faster but has shorter range, while 2.4 GHz travels farther but is more congested. If you are close to your router and experiencing slow speeds, connect your devices to the 5 GHz network for a noticeable improvement.
4. Check for Interference
Microwaves, baby monitors, cordless phones, and even neighboring Wi-Fi networks can interfere with your signal. Try changing your router’s channel in the admin settings — channels 1, 6, and 11 are the least congested on the 2.4 GHz band. Many modern routers can do this automatically.
5. Update Your Router Firmware
Router manufacturers regularly release firmware updates that improve performance and security. Log into your router’s admin panel (usually at 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1) and check for updates. An outdated router can be a significant bottleneck even on a fast internet plan.
6. Consider a Mesh Network for Larger Homes
If you have a multi-story home or a large floor plan, a single router simply cannot cover every room effectively. A mesh Wi-Fi system — such as Google Nest WiFi, Eero, or Orbi — uses multiple nodes placed around your home to create a seamless, whole-home network. This is one of the most impactful upgrades I recommend to families in Upstate NY and Long Island.
7. Run a Speed Test and Compare
Visit fast.com or speedtest.net and run a test both near your router (via Wi-Fi) and directly connected via ethernet cable. If your wired speed matches your plan but Wi-Fi is much slower, the issue is your router or network setup. If both are slow, the problem is with your ISP connection itself.
