Android 17 Parental Controls: A Plain-English Setup Guide for New York Families
Summer break means more free time, later bedtimes, and—for most kids—a lot more screen time. Balancing technology use is a constant struggle for parents. But if your family uses Android phones or tablets, a major update is making that job much easier.
In mid-2026, Google introduced Android 17 and announced that expanded Android parental controls would come directly to the Settings menu on devices that update to Android 17. For families in Saratoga Springs, Albany, Schenectady, and Long Island, this means you no longer have to rely on confusing, expensive third-party apps to keep your kids safe online.
At FleckTech Solutions, we help families take the stress out of home technology. Here is a plain-English guide to what the new Android 17 parental controls can do and how to set them up.
What is New in Android 17 for Families?
Before this update, setting up parental controls on Android often meant juggling multiple apps and accounts. Now, Google has integrated these tools directly into the main Settings menu of every device that updates to Android 17. The controls are protected by a PIN that only parents know.
Here are the most helpful new features for parents:
1. Daily Screen Time Limits: You can set a strict daily limit on how long your child can use their device. Once the time is up, the screen locks, and they can only access emergency contacts.
2. Bedtime Downtime Schedules: Stop the late-night scrolling. You can set specific "downtime" hours (like 9:00 PM to 7:00 AM) where the device automatically locks down to ensure restful sleep without digital distractions.
3. App-Specific Limits: Is your child spending three hours a day on YouTube but ignoring their reading app? You can now set individual time limits for specific apps, or block certain apps entirely.
How to Set Up Android 17 Parental Controls
Getting started is straightforward. You will need your child's device and a few minutes of quiet time.
Step 1: Update the Device. First, make sure your child's phone or tablet is running Android 17. Go to Settings > System > System Update and install any available updates.
Step 2: Find the Controls. Open the Settings app on your child's device and scroll down to Parental Controls or Digital Wellbeing & Parental Controls.
Step 3: Follow the Prompts. The setup wizard will ask you to create a secure Parent PIN. Make sure it is something you will remember, but something your child cannot easily guess (don't use their birthday!).
Step 4: Connect to Family Link. The on-device controls will prompt you to connect to the Google Family Link app on your own phone. This allows you to approve app downloads, track their location, and adjust screen time limits remotely from your own device.
Don't Forget the "School Time" Feature
When summer ends and school begins, the Android 17 update has you covered there, too. The integrated Family Link system includes a "School Time" feature. You can set the phone to automatically enter a restricted mode during school hours, blocking games and social media while still allowing calls and texts to parents.
